Fall Haircolor Trends 2016

We all know the itch you get as the seasons change- you just need to switch things up a bit!  Sometimes it’s a subtle shift.  Sometimes we want to take our summer blonde to a rich brunette.  Whatever your feeling this fall, one of these looks will definitely catch your attention.  Your stylist can help you work out a plan to either get you there, or provide some professional input on what will work best with your features, budget and lifestyle.  Here’s some of my personal favorites!

These subtle highlights are so finely placed they provide a great grow out option to help avoid that harsh rooty look (although I have to admit, it does look like Mila here has a bit of a smudged root to soften things a bit).  They can add the perfect subtle dimension for a beautiful, more natural style.

Bronde Drift Salon Blog

A beautiful dusty blonde that is natural and soft, just dark enough to have them wondering “blonde? Brunette?”  It can be ashy (as this image is) or a warmer depending on your skin tone and features.  Adding some subtle ribbons of dimension throughout or just to frame the face really make this color choice an amazing one.

Dark Roots

Dark Roots Drift Salon Blog

When done well, this deep smudgy root can be a game changer!  Upkeep is easier too, than the every 4 week week highlight visit.  This look can be bold and edgy or soft and smoky.  Whatever your style, this trend is very very hot right now.  And hello!?  Go Chrissy with your edgy little braided part!  Loving that for sure…

Honey Highlights

Honey Highlights Drift Salon BlogOh, Kate does this look so very well.  Blonde may be big for summer, but let’s face it-for Fall?  We love everything that reminds us of pumpkin spice, right?  Ok, actually I’ve never had anything pumpkin spice (I know, right?!) but you get the point.  Now, she does have a bit of caramel in there also, but look at all that beautiful WARM dimension going on!  This is a great way, even for natural blondes wanting a big change, to try a darker haircolor.  All over dark tones can wash out lighter skin tones, but add that warmth and dimension is a great way to make a change in a beautiful way.

Creamy Blonde

Creamy blonde Drift Salon Blog

Moving away from that harsh platinum tone that was so popular, I love this warmer, creamier blonde.  Its light enough to satisfy the die-hard blondes out there, but adds softness and vibrancy for a beautiful payoff.  The subtle tones in dimension can really bring out a great haircut, showing off texture and movement.

I hope some of these ideas will help you in your hair color decision making!  Your stylist can surely guide you in the right direction.  I hope I’ve been able to inspire your next salon visit!

We are so excited to be able to take part in a great local fundraising event- The Canine Carnival, supporting our local Mint Hill Police Department K9’s.

It’s April! Spring is finally here!

Looking ahead to warmer weather, outdoor parties, beach trips…and we all know what the spring hair trends are!  We go bold in the winter, with warm rich tones.  Springtime comes and we all feel the need to brighten.  Lighter, fresher tones. But with all these shifts and changes comes the darker side of Spring time hair-sun damage, color fading, chlorine and salt water…So how do we combat these things, change our styles AND maintain the integrity of hair?  We do this with careful color application processes and with proper maintenance treatments.  Our shampoos and conditioners can only go so far!  The proper treatment will make all the difference in the health and manageability of your hair.  So I’d like to provide a bit of information, not only on the treatments we offer, but on the reasons why YOUR hair might need a little extra TLC.

Maybe you don’t color your hair!  Perhaps you come in every 8-10 weeks religiously for your trims and don’t over-use your curling or flat irons.  Awesome!  BUT- unless you are a recluse or a vampire, you most likely do go out in the sun, perhaps have a beach trip planned or spend some time in the pool over the summer.  What I’m saying here is that no matter how well we treat our hair, natural damage still occurs.  A treatment such as our Awapuhi Wild Ginger Keratriplex would be a great option to repair daily stresses and add deeper moisturizing benefits.  If you find dry scalp or an overabundance of product and oiliness to be an issue, something like the Tea Tree T3 Experience would be another great option!  Great clarifying benefits, an invigorating scalp experience and restoring the PH of your hair and scalp can be a great way to combat the elements and chlorine exposure.

For the rest of us that get a little color happy this time of year, we have some more hardcore options to keep your hair in great shape.  While the Keratriplex treatment works amazingly for adding moisture and protein into the hair strands, working and treating your hair from inside out, we also have The Marula Treatment, which delivers intense hydration, seals split ends, prevents damage while also providing UV protection.

But for those who change their color often, have previous damage from lightener use and over-processing, we bring out the big guns.  Olaplex.  An Olaplex treatment can be a God sent in helping your stylists work her miracles!  Taking you lighter than previously possible or fixing and restoring previously damaged hair by linking broken bonds in the hair during and after chemical services, making them stronger than they were before.

Let me explain:

The average composition of normal hair is composed of  45.2 % carbon, 27.9% oxygen, 6.6% hydrogen, 15.1% nitrogen and 5.2% sulfur.

The keratin found in hair is called “hard” keratin.  This type of keratin does not dissolve in water and is quite resilient. So what is keratin made from?  Keratin is an important, insoluble protein and it is made from eighteen amino acids.  The most abundant of these amino acids is cystine which gives hair much of its strength.

The cuticle layer of the hair shaft normally sits flat, opening only under conditions like heat and an alkaline pH. The role of ammonia in hair dye is to create the perfect pH necessary to open the cuticles and actually allow the hair dye to penetrate into the cortex where natural pigment is lightened and artificial color is deposited. Whether applying color or lightener, the hair’s cuticle and cortex undergoes a chemical breakdown of the bonds that form it.  Lightener especially can break down these bonds in such a way that visible damage becomes present.  Olaplex is the only product on the market that has been scientifically proven to be able to provide re-structuring to the hair’s bonds.

This month, we celebrate spring and hope that I hope I’ve been able to be helpful in explaining WHY your stylist is recommending a treatment and what may work best for you.  This month we are offering 50% off on our Keratriplex, T3 and Marula treatments.  It’s a great way to try out something new or take advantage of saving on your current treatment routine!

Well a busy summer has finally wrapped up and we find ourselves looking toward the upcoming holiday season. With Thanksgiving just around the corner we’d like to say a big thank you to our guests for all of your support and patronage. This first year of business has been filled with a rollercoaster of ups and downs but we made it! And for that we thank you.

We are offering a Black Friday special savings on our liter duos! 40% off of the leader duos as well as our tools this Black Friday. We are also very excited to introduce our new flat iron. The Lumina is a cordless rechargeable travel flat iron with a great little travel bag for storage. The perfect holiday gift as we kick off the Christmas season. For more information on this handy little gem just ask one of our educated stylists.flatiron

And speaking of our stylists, I thought it would be fun to introduce our awesome team to you in a more fun and personal way. Each upcoming blog will feature an interview with one of our fabulous girls, starting off with our oh so sassy Christa! You can read our interview with Christa below!

One thing that I really wanted to do with these monthly blog posts was to provide some great info and tips to all of our guests, whether it be skin care, makeup tips or great styling ideas. Thinking of the coming colder months, I couldn’t help but tackle one of the seasons most annoying problems, dry skin and hair! We have several great products available to soothe and moisturize that may surprise you. Most recently Paul Mitchell has introduced our Marula Oil. Most times in the salon we focus primarily on pampering your hair and it can sometimes be overlooked to remind our guests that this fabulous oil is also great for your skin as well! And a little bit goes a long way!oilwithwords

Another tried and true, great original product from Paul Mitchell that we love is our Awapuhi Moisture Mist. You may see your stylist use this in the salon while doing foils as its great when we want to stop the oxidizing process or fill in the hair’s cuticle for more even application, but this product provides quite a hefty all around beauty punch. As a makeup artist, there are many times I need to dampen a brush, in which case the moisture mist is a great option. Did you know that a dampened angle brush can turn most any powdered eyeshadows into a liner? After showering, the moisture mist is also fabulous to hydrate the skin, especially on freshly shaved legs and can also be used as a cool hydrator in the summer heat if you keep it in the fridge! This is definitely one of my favorites and I hope these tips have been helpful.

So now let’s get to know one of my favorite girls in the world! Christa has been with us since the very beginning and not only is she a great stylist, but she’s a great friend as well.
Let’s start with one of the most important questions of all….
What is your favorite snack food?
Chicken wings! That counts as a snack food right?!

Which animal is your favorite and which are you most fearful of?
Dogs for sure! So stinking cuddly! Snakes! They’re creepy the way they slither. Yuck

What was your favorite cartoon as a child?
Rugrats for sure! Tommy pickles was my idol! Such a rebel always breaking out of the playpen!

What is the last movie you’ve seen?
Pitch perfect! Finally was able to watch it since I stopped living under a rock

On a scale of 1 to 10, how intolerable do you find baby pictures on Facebook?
Can I say 0? I love seeing all the baby pictures! Gives me baby fever though. So I’m looking into getting a baby ASAP

What’s one word that you would most used to describe yourself?
I feel like sassy describes me perfect!

What’s one word your friends would use most to describe you?

If you could retire tomorrow, what would you do?
Head to the beach and sit my fat butt in the sand and enjoy an ice cold beer!

If you were a ghost, who would you want to haunt?
My salon family at Drift! It’d be absolutely hilarious!

If you were lost on a deserted island with only one friend and one hair product who/what would it be?
I’d have to take my best friend/fiancé Brady Oakes! Marula Oil!
LOL, another Marula Oil lover. …I told you it was awesome! We at Drift Salon wish you each a wonderful holiday and safe travels throughout the season!

Till next month,
Christina Fascenda

Welcome to the first Drift Salon blog post! What an amazing year it has been! I have to say, I have pondered over this first post for some time. So many things I would like to touch on and share, but narrowing it down-my goodness! I’m so excited to share things with you and give you a view into our world that I have found it difficult to focus on one topic. But I will do my best. I have great plans for what I would like to see this blog morph into, but as we are heading into June-our one year mark just days away, I think it is only fitting that for our first post, I share with you a little about who we are, what our passions are and the vision we have for the futureof Drift Salon.

Drift began as a culmination of Matthew’s and my love for not only each other, but for the idea of creating a business together that could encompass my passion for hair and makeup, his desires to become a business owner and our vision of the life we wanted to create together. If you don’t already know, Matt and I have a long history together, going back over 20 years! Our friendship began as children and evolved over many years, with much growth in between, and bringing us together again several years ago. This June not only marks the Salon’s 1 year anniversary, but our wedding! We will officially tie the knot this June 13th (The salon will be closed-sorry!). One long time mutual friend commented, “it’s about time!” and it very much is!

When we decided to take the plunge and open a business we talked at length about what was important to us, what we wanted to stand for and how we wanted to function as a salon. The décor was easy and quite simple really-we both love the ocean, would love to be closer to it and wanted to create a space that enabled our guests to relax and enjoy their time with us in an environment reminiscent of the beach. Decorating is the easy part though. The most important part to us is that not only did we want to partner with an amazing product company that held the same standards and values we did, but we wanted to create not just a great team of stylists, but a family of stylists. We wanted our seahorseguests to feel comfortable and welcome when they are with us-like they are with family. After a year of adjustments and growing pains, I think we have a pretty awesome group of girls and I am proud to call them my sisters. I am thrilled to say that most of the reviews and comments we have received have been positive and almost all of them mention what a great team we have and how fun it is to hang out with us. We know that your time is valuable and we are so appreciative that you choose to share it with us!

One thing that we value immensely is education! It is important to us that we are always learning and growing, being able to offer our guests the very best experience possible. It’s funny actually-I find myself oftentimes giving my makeup clients tips and pointers while I am working. It’s second nature at this point! I love to share the knowledge I have and we have a team that crazyshares the same passion. Another thing we try to focus on is having fun! We want to enjoy ourselves as a team as we feel it brloganings us closer together as a group but also that we are better stylists for you because of it and we genuinely care about each other. We have had Halloween costume contests, broken bread together and had some fun with pajama day. You will be excited to hear that we have also decided to include our guests in our silliness (this one’s in homage to Matt’s love of hideous Hawaiian shirts;) and will be having Hawaiian shirt Saturdays throughout the month of July to celebrate summer! More on this to come!

In closing, I would like to say thank you to those that have been a huge part in making our first year fabulous- our families, who have not only come in for free haircuts, but have supported us in so many ways, our team, who have all been patient throughout this growth process and come to work every day with smiles on their faces and love for what they do, Paul Mitchell and their fabulous educators that not only teach us but provide a product we can be proud to stand behind and one last thank you- along with some exciting news!

Recently we heard about a contest going on at Bloom.com and entered our salon- we submitted pictures of the salon and were voted best out of 20 other salons also entered! We are so pleased that others seem to love the look we’ve created. So we would like to thank Bloom.com and their users for voting for us. What did we win, you ask? Well- we won 00 in free tools and equipment from Minerva Beauty! So we’d also like to extend a thanks to www.minervabeauty.com! We can’t wait to pick up a few more great pieces of equipment to help us make our salon even better for our guests. Thanks to anyone who voted for us!

What’s to come next month? Well, I have had the privilege of getting to know this awesome group of stylists this year and would love for you to do the same! Next month starts our stylist interviews. We will get to know the team as well as hopefully start providing you with some great beauty tips-hair, makeup, whatever! I’d love your input as well, so if you have questions we can help you with or topics you would like to learn more on, please reach out and I will do my best to help!

Thanks for all you have done as part of our salon “family” and welcome to our dysfunctional group!

Drift Salon is coming up on one year and we dug through some of the pictures from the start and I came across some transition pictures of the salon.  Below you will see the salon as the Papa John’s (for those that remember it as that), then we blow out all the walls, cleaned the place up, and then put in the wall frames.  After that things happened so fast I didn’t think about taking pictures so the last one is the place completed!  Just fun to see it transform. Enjoy

special olympics

Drift Salon is happy to add the Special Olympics to the list of charities that we support.  April and May we will be collecting for them and the salon will be matching up to five. hundred dollars.  Special Olympics transforms lives through the joy of sport, every day, everywhere. We are the world’s largest sports organization for people with intellectual disabilities: with 4.4 million athletes in 170 countries — and millions more volunteers and supporters. We are also a global social movement.
